Werebelushi rants: Movies These Days
Werebelushi:
Hello i'm That Werebelushi In The Shades and welcome to another edition of Werebelushi Rants.
Tonight I will be covering the mess that has become the movie industry these days, including the following topics: Spoof movies, CGI, remakes, and the use of 3D.
First of all i'd like to say that the spoof genre of comedy is dying thanks to a certain duo of film makers, Seltzer and Friedberg.
How many of these idiotic attempts at 'spoofs' have they churned out so far? I admit the first few Scary Movies were funny, but then come along Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, Vampires Suck, Meet the Spartans and recently announcements...The Biggest Movie Of All Time 3D!
Geesh. What's next? Video Game Movie? Random Movie? Animated Movie? Puppet Movie? Oh wait...there was already a spoof movie involving puppets...Team America: World Police.
These kind of movies overruse gross-out humor and references that seem outdated even by today's standards, not to mention the obviously blatant use of sexual innuedos and writing that says: "Fuck it, let's not actually watch the movies we're supposed to be spoofing and just watch the trailers."
Spoof movies weren't always bad though, the Austin Powers movies are a very good example of this, as is it's British counterpart Johnny English. And let's not forget Mel Brooks - the man brought us Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, The Producers, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights.
Also if there's one other person who ticks me off in the movie industry it's Michael Bay. I admit that he did a good job when he started out and directed that Meatloaf music video for I'd Do Anything For Love but the Transformers movies simply flat out suck.
And also I hear he's planning on rebooting TMNT and make the turtles aliens. I don't see how that works. How can you make the turtles aliens? They're anthropomorphic turtles. They should stay as just that.
I'm sorry if i'm offending any fans out there but it's the truth. And also what is with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg re-releasing their works and mucking them up?
It seems to me that Lucas is still continuing to milk the Star Wars franchise for what it's worth. Even in terms of merchandising. Like there's these figures that look like kid versions of the characters. So I guess it's another case of Muppet Babies Disorder.
As for Spielberg....here's a good idea. Why not make a special edition dvd of the movie 1941 already? I know it was a bomb in the theaters, but that's not a reason for you to keep it hidden away.
It wouldn't hurt to do that now, would it? You could put on documentaries, a commentary or two or maybe a litle tribute to John Belushi or something. Anything... As long as you don't replace him with a CGI replica.
Speaking of which this is my next rant. CGI. CGI can be good if used sparingly like if it's used for animated movies and such but recently it's been done too much. Yes i'm looking forward to Wreck It Ralph in case you're wondering.
Even horror movies have CGI gore in them now. And another thing I don't get about that is well the way horror movies are these days.
I have nothing against the SAW franchise as a whole, it's just that most people these days tend to think of these as actual horror movies when they're nothing but torture porn.
Action movies these days have CGI explosions too. And before you ask...i'm going to be watching the Expendables II when it comes out.
And then there's the motion capture thing...which if done right goes well but if not it falls into the Uncanny Valley category.
Do we really need to see these creepy looking characters that look more like they should be in a wax museum than on the big screen?
I know that the Jim Henson Company now uses computers but that's for something entirely different and it's called digital puppetry, so they are keeping up the tradition that Jim Henson himself left behind.
3D has been around since the 30's and 40's and up to the 50's and even the 80's. But now it seems that almost every movie coming out especially the kids ones and the like are coming out in 3D.
I actually LIKED Spy Kids 3D but that's because it had Stallone in it. And he was actually doing it for his kids.
And yes Avatar was good.
We don't need so much 3D in movies, it's a gimmick that's been overdone and needs to die out.
I mean the way I see it, they're gonna resort to re-releasing almost every movie ever made in 3d.
Although Animal House in 3D would be hillarious. You'd get to see the food flying out of the screen during the food fight scene.
Next up is remakes and reboots. It seems to me that there's always a reboot or remake coming out.
And sometimes these work and other times they don't. Examples of remakes that actually do work include the 1980's remakes of The Fly and The Thing among others.
Examples of ones that don't work: Nightmare On Elm Street remake. I have nothing against Jackie Earl Haley but my personal favorite Freddy will ALWAYS be Robert Englund.
I actually liked Sly Stallone's Rocky and Rambo revivals/final installments, that is until I found out that Sly will be making another Rambo film which he will call the final one.
This wasn't so bad until I read that he plans on killing his character off? What? Are you out of your mind, Stallone? You can't kill off John J. Rambo like that. He's the one supposed to be doing the killing NOT the other way around.
What? What is the reason you want to kill the character off? Is it because you feel you're too old for the part? Bullspit. You're NOT that old, Sly - you're only in your 60's. You made Rocky Balboa despite the complaints you got from others saying that you were too old. Not to mention Expendables.
I hope for the love of Staten that you change your mind about this. Because this really IS a very wrong move for you.
You know with so many movies being rebooted and remade - I hope that they don't do something really stupid like trying to remake Gremlins or something.
Hollywood really IS running out of ideas at this point and since most writers have gone on strike now...a good original story is hard to find in cinema these days. Pixar seems to have the right idea...I just saw Brave by the way and loved it.
This has been your ranting werebelushi.
