Monstermaster13 reviews: Hairspray
Nathan:
Hello everyone, i'm Monstermaster13 and welcome to the fifth installment of Double Walken Month.
Tonight's installment is going to be different for two reasons...the first being that this isn't a movie where Walken is evil. And the second being that this is a musical.
As you all know Chris was a song and dance man before he became an actor - and boy can he dance...we all know how graceful and agile he is especially after seeing the Fatboy Slim music video "Weapon of Choice".
I'm currently here in Baltimore and i'm reviewing the movie Hairspray. I'll start with a bit of a backstory.
Hairspray originally started as a movie in 1988 before it got made to a stage-play...in 2007 it got remade and this is how it turned out. The original 1988 move was made by John Waters and had Divine as Edna.
If you are a Disney fan..you'd know that Divine was the inspiration behind Ursula in the Little Mermaid.
So grab your dancing shoes and dance like it's 1969..it's time to review the 2007 remake of Hairspray!
The main plot of this movie focusses around a chubby girl by the name of Tracy Turnblad - who is very energetic and loves to sing and dance. She's a huge fan of the Corny Collins Show.
She's portrayed by the adorable Nikki Blonski in her first film role. Her mother Edna is played by John Travolta in some very clever makeup and a fat-suit. And i'm just going to flat out say this.....aaaaaaaaaaaw! Edna is so cute. I love her so much.
Edna's husband Wilbur is played by Chris Walken. And he's terrific in this movie, he's not his usual terrifying badass self here - he's rather nice and fatherly.
Tracey's best friend Penny is played by Amanda Bynes, who is also known for her hit tv series The Amanda Show (which btw was awesome.). Other cast members include Britany Snow, Queen Latifah (Who is one hell of a singer!) , Elijah Kelly, and even Jerry Stiller who played Wilbur in the original 1988 film.
In a nice twist and reversal of Batman Returns, Walken's character is a protagonist while Michelle Pffiefer's character is a manipulative antagonist.
The main male love interest is Link, an Elvis type who is played by Zac Efron - who you might know from that extremely overrated High School Musical franchise....btw he's actually pretty good here.
I'm not going to spoil the plot this time as i'm pretty sure most of you already know what it is about but I'm going to reccomend this. This is a fun romp that i'm sure you'll all enjoy, especially you Walken fans out there.
The music and choreography in this movie are simply stunning, and the sets, and costumes all go very well together and represent the 1960's in a brilliant and entertaining way. My personal favorite number is You're Timeless To Me sung by Wilbur and Edna.
Trust me...if they are any female Walken fans out there, you will be swooning and crooning like crazy once you see Wilbur dancing.
Plus...it's got a powerful message about being proud of who and what you are, not only that for people like my good friend Blackbluedawg who happen to like overweight people, they'll find that Tracey and Edna are both very likable.
I give this movie a ten out of ten rating, two monstrous clawed thumbs up and a high reccomendation.
This has been another Monstermaster13 review for Double Walken month, stay tuned for more installments.
