Monstermaster13 reviews: The Addiction

Nathan:

Hello one and all and welcome back to Double Walken month reviews.   Ah,  vampires,  bloodsucking,  vengeful,  charismatic creatures of the night.

That is before Stephanie Myer got her greasy mitts on them and turned them into a bunch of sparkling male model wannabes with more emotional problems than a Jerry Springer Show attendee.

Throughout history there have been many takes on the vampire genre,  both in horror and in satire.

With shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel being extremely popular in the 90's...and iconic characters like Drac and Nosferatu being forever remembered in our minds and hearts...vampires much like zombies,  werecreatures and the like are forever going to be a part of popular culture.    In 2012 we got Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp and the animated flick Hotel Transylvania.    In tv circles we got introduced to Marceline from the animated series Adventure Time.

Today i'm looking at a vampire movie that takes a whole different take on the vampire lore.  The movie is the 1995 film The Addiction,  directed by Abel Ferrara.

The plot focuses on a grad student by the name of Kathleen Conklin played by Lili Taylor,   who after getting bitten -  finds herself turning into one herself and is having a difficult time coming to terms with her new life style and her newfound thirst for blood.   She goes through the classic symptons of turning into a vampire but in a rather clever spin on the concept,  it shows her moral degradation.

Eventually she meets up with a vampire named Peina (who is played by Chris Walken, naturally.)  who has learned to conquer his addictions via meditation and fasting.

Kind of reminds me of how Wielder Wesen in Grimm are able to control their beastly urges and their "woge".   In particular it reminds me of how Monroe is able to keep in control of his Blutbad side via diet,  drugs and a bit of exercise.

This is really a good movie as it has a rather refreshing take on the vampire genre and lore as a whole,  as these vamps are more human-like and aren't beastly or vicious and they don't have fangs.

I can really relate to the main character in this movie because sometimes I find it very hard to control my bloodthirsty Hessian instincts,  but like her - I learned how to cope with it thanks to a mentor -  that mentor in fact being Chris himself,  who btw is the original carrier of the Hessian Hex curse.    Actually I quite like being the Hessian...I don't like having to have a human form though...humans are so...eeew...disgusting and cruel.

The story and characters are well written,   the actors give a fine performance - especially Christopher Walken,   and it is a solid and extremely classy horror flick.

I heavily recommend this if you are into the supernatural,   vampires,  horror movies or are just a Walken fan in general.

I give this movie 10 out of 10,  two monstrous clawed thumbs up and a high reccomendation.    So check it out.

This has been another Double Walken month review so please stay tuned for more..and when the reviews are done...stay tuned for a special storyarc of the Hessian Hex saga.
