Monstermaster13 reviews: Batman Returns
Nathan:
Hello everyone, i'm Monstermaster13 and welcome to another installment of Double Walken month reviews.
I'm here in Gotham City for tonight's review which is of the 1992 movie Batman Returns, now if you are a comic book fan you probably already know the history behind the iconic crime-fighter Bruce Wayne aka Batman or "The Dark Knight".
In 1989 director Tim Burton brought the comic to life with Batman, and even though people protested about Michael Keaton being cast because they only knew him for his roles in coemdies...the movie did extremely well. And i'm going to say this...I really DO prefer Nicholson over Ledger when it comes to Joker. I'm sorry but Ledger was a little too grizzly for my liking.
And Michael Keaton is the best Batman and the Best Bruce Wayne. I'm sorry..I just can't take Bale's Batman serious especially with that voice that makes him sound like he's doing a Stallone impression. Val Kilmer was okay...and Kevin Conroy is one of the best animated Batmans, Clooney flat out stank, and Adam West is...Adam West.
(Mayor West:
Nobody messess with Adam We!)
This sequel to Batman has three different antagonists, the first is the Penguin played by Danny Devito. Who did a very convincing job with his performance and the makeup played by Stan Winston - who also did the transformation scenes for the tv show Manimal, he also made the Teminator, the Dinos in Jurassic Park and many more.
Stan Winston also directed Ghosts and did the makeup and special fx for it with MJ playing 5 roles. I'd definitely say that he did not disapoint, especially with the Mayor, wow...I did not know that was Michael at all - and the Ghouls looked awesome.
The second antagonist is Catwoman played by the glamourous Michelle Pffiefer. What a babe! She starts off all meek and mousy but after getting thrown out the window...she becomes spunky, alluring and not to mention badass. And I learned that she learned martial arts and yoga among other things to prepare for the role.
The third antagonist is a unique character that is not in any of the comics...and that is Max Shreck played by who else...Christopher Walken. If you're a horror movie fan you'll notice his name is a nod to the actor who played Nosferatu. A very appropriate vampiric name for a man with a vampiric aura.
He is a buisnessman who wants to build a power-plant in Gotham City and also owns a toy-company. He is a fantastic character to watch. Originally Harvey Dent was supposed to be in this movie but that was scraped, along with Robin. In the original screenplay draft Max was supposedly the brother of the Penguin.
Speaking of Penguins the other actors that were considered for the part or rumoured to have been considered were Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando, Christopher Lloyd, Bob Hoskins and get this...John Candy. I think Devito was the best choice. As much as I love John Candy..I cannot imagine him playing a villain.
There were many actressess considered for Catwoman including singer/actress Cher, and yes there was an incident in which Sean Young ambushed Tim Burton dressed in a homemade Catwoman costume and practically tried to make him give her the role.
The acting, music, atmosphere and special effects are all amazing beyond belief and it is my personal opinion that Burton's Batman movies are the best ones.
Of course this was darker than the first and as such was the victim of the worst enemy of every kid everywhere - Soccermoms. Because there was a Mcdonalds tie-in at the time, they thought that the movie was too dark and gruesome and they complained, resulting in not only the McDonalds toy promotion getting the axe but also Burton dropping it on the third installment - which resulted in the infamous Schumacher Batman movies. Which I will not go into too much detail because you know how bad Batman and Robin was.
I really liked this movie and just about everything about it, I heavily reccomend this movie and give it 10 out of 10 and two monstrous clawed thumbs up.
BTW - Here's a little interesting fact for you....did you know Tim Burton was reluctant to cast Walken in this movie because he's scared of him? It's true. Tim really was scared of Chris.
Eh...Burton was just lucky that Chris had not started turning Hessian. Trust me...the process is very scary and painful...and if Chris transformed he'd be even more dangerous than normal.
I'm Monstermaster13 and this has been another Double Walken month review. Stay tuned for more
