Jay Leno Tribute Show
Announcer:
Live from Some-Studio-Over-In-Oakendale-USA-That-Isn’t-Burbank-But-It-Sure-Looks-Like-It, it’s Monstermaster13’s tribute to Jay Leno and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno with music by the attic monster band, and i’m your announcer Mr Maxwell Monster!
And now here’s your host……….Naaaaaaaaaathan Forester!
*Nathan enters and walks up on stage, hugging and hi-fiving the audience members just like Jay himself does*
Nathan:
Hello everyone, i’m Monstermaster13 from the time when troll referred to either a mythical creature, a toy doll with wacky hair or a bad b-movie from the 80’s. And welcome to a very special episode of my Monstermaster13 retrospective series.
As you can probably tell, i’m here at the Monster TV Network for a very special reason. It’s February 7th, and you know what that means. Well it means two things, both of which are very sad. If you are a New Zealand kid, it means that the holidays are over and you have to go back to school, but if you’re not a Kiwi - it means that tonight's the night that a certain comedian retires from the show that made him a household name.
In case you didn’t know already, Jay Leno is retiring from The Tonight Show to hand it over to Jimmy Fallon. And tonight is his last show. Which is why I am paying tribute to this wonderful man in a way he himself would very proud of.
The Monster TV Network crew was kind enough to help me create a replica of Jay’s Tonight Show set complete with guest chairs and host desk w/chair. Also it comes with a Leno coffee mug and bobblehead doll (which I got from the Monster world branch of the NBC store).
I’ve already talked about my history with Leno and my overall views on the many trials he went through to keep his show running, I also talked briefly about what it was like for him growing up and gave my own 2 cents on the whole Conan fiasco but tonight I am going to be discussing what I love the most about him.
What I admire about him is how easy-going and nice he is in terms of his personality and comedic style, he doesn’t resort to using puns or one-liners, he doesn’t resort to making jokes that are too raunchy for family audiences, he goes about it in a way that is not only hillarious but also charming and straight forward.
He’s what I like to call the comedy everyman, a man who knows how to make people laugh and how to tug at their heartstrings. Jay always knows how to get a crowd roaring with laughter and he’s truly an inspiration to others.
And not only that but he now has his own special day - Jay Leno Day! He also has his own trope on TVTropes named after him. That trope being called The Leno Device trope! And so to commemorate this we are doing a full scale tribute to him in the form of the first Jay Leno Day special!
He has brought us 22 years of laughs, headlines, and great musical guests. And much like a few of my other favorites like the late great John Candy, I cannot think of anything he has said that has come across as mean-spirited.
Well apart from that fake interview he did with MJ but I forgive him for that because that was during the time MJ was on trial back in 2003 so that is understandable because during then, MJ was a popular target for jokes - including by Conan, Letterman, SNL, and Jay himself. R.I.P Michael Jackson.
Any jabs made at other entertainers by Jay himself were purely for comedic purposes and were all in good fun. After all, Jay doesn’t go out of his way to shock anyone or to make them feel uncomfortable, he makes them feel like they are right at home.
That is why to be a guest on his show is an honour, true most guests only do it to plug their latest movie or tv show but sometimes they just do it because they love it because of how fun it is to have a conversation with him.
Also part of what makes the Tonight Show so memorable is the clever and inventive bits such as the various character sketches he had during the late 90’s, the Amazon and Ebay segments, Jaywalking, the animal related segments and of course Headlines. Not to mention his correspondence segments with recurring favorites like Gilbert Gottfried.
Jay is also one of the few modern comedians I appreciate because of the fact he doesn’t need to resort to using swear words or innuendos in order to be funny, he’s just perfect the way he is - and that is a very good thing in my opinion.
In addition to this - he also is one heck of a voice actor. As he really does have a voice that lends itself well to animation as well as the right kind of cartoonish look for it as well. Which of course is what makes him such a likable guy.
He also knows how to poke fun of himself, especially when it comes to his famous chin which like several other overrused celebrity jokes has been overdone to death, next to Michael Jackson jokes, jokes about how dumb Bush is, and of course the old ‘Sarah Jessica Parker looks like a horse’ joke. And for the record, I think SJP is attractive and that there is nothing wrong with the way she looks!
Ever since getting the job in late 1992, he has been tickling our funnybones and tugging at our heartstrings. Try as they might, but you just can’t replace a man like Jay. No matter how desperate NBC is for ratings, they will never be able to top Jay’s show.
For Jay to me is irreplaceable, you cannot replace Jay no matter how hard you try. For even though the main spark of light is gone - the flame of the Tonight Show legacy will burn on and on and on.
He is also a good storyteller with plenty of funny and interesting stories to share, which he demonstrated in his autobiography Leading With My Chin. Especially the ones about what it was like for him growing up and the ones about his parents, those ones just crack me up to no end!
This man in a way inspired several of my own stories and my own sense of humour. Without him, they would have been no Wereleno or even one of my Rights Fighters OCs Robo-Leno/Android Comedian - who is based on him btw.
So, Jay - if you are reading this back over in LA, I hope that you will have a good day and that your last show will be a great one. I wish you lots of luck with whatever you have planned for the future.
You inspired me in so many ways and so to that, all of us here at Monstermaster13 productions thank you for everything you’ve done, and for the 22 years of laughs, musical guests, Jaywalking, and Headlines as well as just for being a wonderful host in general. Thank you Jay, thank you for making late night one of the best programming blocks in the history of television!
Also - in case you’re wondering about my friend the Wereleno, well...he’s no longer a bad guy, in fact he has decided to become a superhero and now has his own spin-off show which is a superhero comedy show here on the Monster TV Network. So he is not going anywhere.
Vincent of my attic monster gang is also preparing a special tribute show for Jay over at the local Boo Haw Haw comedy club so be sure to watch that after this and have a blast. I know I will.
Anyway, i’d like you all to sing along with us as we sing a special song that I dedicate to Jay himself. Ladies and gentlemen, the Attic Monster Band!
*the band starts playing Arthur’s theme*
Nathan: *singing*
Once in your life, you find her.
Someone who turns your heart around.
Next thing you know.
You’re closing down the town.
Wake up and she’s still with you.
Even though you left her way across town.
You’re wondering to yourself..
Hey, what have I found?
When you get caught between the moon and New York city.
I know it’s crazy but it’s true.
If you get caught between the moon and New York City.
Best that - best that you can do is fall in love.
Audience: *singing*
When you get caught between the moon and New York City.
I know it’s crazy but it’s true.
If you get caught between the moon and New York City.
The best that you can do is..fall in love.
Nathan: *singing*
Arthur, he does as he pleases.
All of his life, his master’s toys.
And deep in his heart.
He’s just - he’s just a boy.
Livin his life one day at a time.
He’s showing himself a real good time.
He’s laughing about the way..
They want him to be.
When you get caught between the moon and New York city.
I know it’s crazy but it’s true.
If you get caught between the moon and New York City.
The best that you can do. (Best that you can do.)
Best that - best that you can do is fall in love.
Audience: *singing*

*the song ends*
Nathan:
Thank you everyone in the audience for singing along to this classic song dedicate to one heck of a Tonight Show host. And thank everyone at the Monster TV Network for making this all possible and I thank you all for reading/watching this - the very first Jay Leno Day special and for helping me plan this special out.
But most of all I would like to thank Jay Leno for bringing us all 22 years of comedy gold every night at 11: 35pm on NBC. Speaking of Jay, I wonder if he’s seen my tribute to him yet.
Jay Leno:
Why yes Nathan, I have! *Leno walks up on stage*
Nathan:
Woah! Jay, it’s you! I can’t believe that you’re here!
Jay Leno:
Hello Nathan. I saw that wonderful tribute you did to me just now, and I have to say that I am very glad that you are a fan of mine. It’s always nice to know that there are people out there who appreciate my work.
Nathan:
Say...Jay, did you happen to get the letters I sent you a long while back? I'm just wondering because it's been years.
Jay Leno:
Why yes, I did.
Nathan:
Even the ones in which I sent fake death threats and accused you of being evil? You know the ones I set up back when my wereleno character was a villain? *blushes slightly*
Jay Leno:
Yes. Those were pretty funny! I loved reading those. You have quite a twisted sense of humour - and I like that a LOT.
Nathan:
You mean you weren’t put off by those ones at all?
Jay Leno:
Of course not, those were hilarious. I had a real good laugh reading those letters. You’re one heck of a writer, you know that.
Nathan:
You really mean it? Aaaw, thank you - Jay!
Jay Leno:
No problem. I always enjoy it when someone writes something about me or my work - except when it’s by those crazy people who hated on me back in 2010.
Nathan:
Well i’m glad you actually took the time to read my letters as they were received. I was worried for a second that you wouldn’t get them. I can't help it really, because like my good friend Ariana's character in the Hessian Hex saga...I worry, a lot.
Jay Leno:
Why is that?
Nathan:
Well...my mum kept telling me that you binned them, you know - threw them away. I hope that isn’t true.
Jay Leno:
What? I would never do that. Your letters brightened up my day and I enjoyed reading them, you truly are a wonderful writer. PS: I love those song parodies you did about me. And I love the idea of a musical based on me.
Nathan:
You do?
Jay Leno:
Yes, I sure do!
Nathan:
I was really horrified and offended by that song that one crazy chick sang about you, it made you come across as some sort of paranoid nutjob and it was out of character for you to be portrayed in such a manner.
Jay Leno:
Yeah, it was. I wonder what happened to that chick. I haven’t heard a peep from her ever since then.
Nathan:
She probably either died or winded up in an insane asylum. Either that or she was arrested for defamation of character or slander.
Jay Leno:
Oh well! Thank you for organizing this special tribute in honor of my last night of being Tonight Show host.
Nathan:
You’re welcome. Please stick around for a while, for you won’t want to miss this! Because...it’s party time!
*Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich pop up*
Both:
Did someone say party?
Nathan:
I did!
Cheese Sandwich:
What’s the occassion?
Nathan:
It’s Jay Leno’s last episode of the Tonight Show, the official last episode. So we’re throwing a special tribute for him and now we’re throwing a party for him!
Pinkie Pie:
Well then….what are we waiting for? Let’s party! *she pulls back a cloth covering something, revealing the party-canonball-with-canons that she and Cheese made together*
Cheese Sandwich:
Hey, Mr Leno - check out what we’ve made for you. We made you this super cool party car to add to your collection.
Pinkie Pie:
And that’s not all! With help from Twilight Sparkle and Storyteller, we made this cool machine called the Ponifier. It enables you to see what you would look like if you were a pony! Give it a try!
Jay Leno:
Okay! *he steps inside the Ponifier machine*
(once Jay has stepped into the ponifier machine, Cheese Sandwich and Pinkie Pie turn it on and then stand back as it activates, within a few minutes later a grey pony with a mostly white mane and tail except with a few black streaks, blue eyes, wearing a blue tie and a suit top - with a cutie mark in the shape of a car, a motorcycle and the Tonight Show logo, with a similar build to Big Macintosh emerges out of the machine, it is a pony version of Jay right down to having a jaw-line similar to Jay’s own)
Nathan:
Wow! You make a pretty cool looking pony, Jay!
Jay Leno:
I’ll say, i’ve never been a pony before but this is amazing. Thank you Pinkie Pie, thank you Cheese Sandwich!
Both:
You’re welcome, Jay!
Cheese Sandwich:
And the best part about that is that you can use this pony form if you ever wish to visit Equestria sometime.
Jay Leno:
That is so thoughtful. Thank you.
Nathan:
No, Jay - thank YOU! Thank you for giving us 22 years of laughter and entertainment and for inspiring me and all the other fans of your wonderful show. Thank you for everything you’ve done and for being such a wonderful person.
Jay Leno:
You’re all welcome!
Nathan:
I wish you lots of luck with whatever you have planned for the future and I hope that your last night is a good one.
Jay Leno:
Oh it will be. Thank you so much Nathan for having me on here. *he morphs back to normal from being a pony*
Nathan:
The fun isn’t over yet, Jay! Come on! There’s lots more to do! I’ve got to give thanks to all of the good people and monsters who helped make this possible.
I’d like to thank the crew at the Monster TV Network for organising this and for helping me to make a real replica of the Tonight Show set, the staff for all their hard work, the catering crew for their catering skills...speaking of which...what happened to the special free snack--cakes I was going to give out?
Homer Simpson:
Mmmm...strawberry snack cakes with extra frosting. *drools, we see strawberry icing dripping from his mouth*
Nathan:
Homer!
Homer Simpson:
Was I supposed to eat those?
Nathan:
You were supposed to share them with everyone in the audience, silly! I told you that before we started taping!
Homer Simpson:
Do’h!
Jay Leno:
*laughs* It’s okay, Nathan At least we still have that beautiful cake that your catering crew helped make with your mother. *points to the cake that is made to resemble his face complete with the chin*
Nathan:
Yeah...and don’t forget the BBQ! Anyway, I would also like to thank the attic monster band for taking the time to perform for us today, our special guests Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich for coming here all the way from Ponyville to help throw this party, Homer Simpson for being the food taste tester.
Homer Simpson:
I get paid in donuts.
Nathan:
Next, i’d like to thank my announcer Mr Maxwell Monster for leading his magnificent vocals to the opening intro, my vampire friend Vincent for arranging Jay to come here in order to be the guest of honour, and last but not least - Jay Leno himself.
Thank you, Jay! Thank you for everything!
Jay Leno:
No problem, Nathan! *he and Nathan do high-fives*
Nathan:
Say...where is Vincent anyway? He’s usually the first person in line to see these sort of things. I wonder where he is.
*a bat flies in and then lands down on the ground before morphing into a man who looks a lot like a much younger version of Jay, he is dressed in classic biker attire*
Vincent:
Here I am!
Nathan:
Vincent! I just want to thank you for helping to organise this special and for arranging for Jay himself to be the guest of honour.
Vincent:
It was no trouble at all, Jay and I are close pals. I’ve been in line for tapings of his show since late 1992. When I heard he was retiring this year - I wanted to help make sure that this tribute to him went off without a hitch.
Jay Leno:
Well I say you did a terrific job, Vince.
Vincent:
Coming from you, Jay - that means a lot. Thanks, for being such a terrific and wonderful friend!
Nathan:
And thank you all for tuning into this special tribute to the king of late night and thank you all for enjoying it and having a good time. I hope that you will stay around for the after party and that you too will share your own personal Jay related memories with us.
I’m Monstermaster13 and this has been the very first Jay Leno Day special. I hope you all have enjoyed it and that you will continue to be supportive of the good folks of the Monster TV Network and of Jay himself.
Now if you excuse me….we’re all going to get ready for the afterparty! Goodbye everyone, see you there!
All:
Goodbye everyone, goodbye!
Nathan:
And cue the end credits!
END
(The end credits appear on screen, paying tribute to Leno as clips from all his best moments on the Tonight Show are played in a montage to the song Carry On Wayward Son, after the credits are done - a special version of the Big Dog Productions logo appears resembling Nathan’s friend Sam)
