Nathan:
Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Monstermaster13's reviews, the show where I review movies and talk about what I like about them. If you are wondering why I am in the form of an anthro koala, it's because today's episode is going to be about a movie that features anthro animals in it and that movie is - Zootopia. So, in order for me to not look out of place in the setting of this movie I decided to turn myself into an anthro koala and I must say I turned out rather well.
Zootopia is Disney's latest motion picture and it features an all anthro animal character ensemble, a feat that was also done in their version of Robin Hood. As you know, i'm a furry and I'm not ashamed to admit that - I used to be because people made fun of me for it by using negative stereotypes, but now I am not. This movie is a real inspiring one because it tells you that you can do anything, in fact that is the motto of the town itself, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) is a rabbit who moves to Zootopia to fullfill her dream of being the first rabbit officer in the ZPD, unfortunately despite being top of her class she ends up with parking duty and that's where she meets a particularly witty fox named Nick Wilde.
The two of them become partners when they are required to solve a case involving Mr Otterton who has gone missing, I know what you're thinking - this sounds like one of those buddy cop movies where two guys have to work together to solve a case - well..you're half right. While it is kind of like those types of movies like Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour or my guilty pleasure movie Collision Course starring Jay Leno and Pat Morita (which I was going to do a re-review on before deciding to take a look at this movie) - it is anything but that, it's actually pretty interesting and has a few twists on it. The all anthro animal characters are great too, and not just Nick and Judy.
My particular favorites include Gazelle voiced by the sultry Hispanic songstress Shakira, Mayor Lionheart voiced by J.Jonah Jameson himself J.K Simmons, that adorable little ball of wool known as Dawn Bellwether - who has a pretty surprising reveal in the second and last acts of the movie. Chief Bogo is a pretty badass buffalo. And that adorable portly cheetah Clawhauser, who reminds me a lot of Wiggum from The Simpsons only smarter and a tad on the geeky side. I also thought that the character 'Mr Big'(not the villain from Moonwalker, that's Joe Pesci) is particularly interesting since not only is he voiced by Maurice Lamarche - but he's also an anthro shrew version of the famous character Don Vito Corleone from the Godfather as played by the late Marlon Brando, he even talks like Vito as well. Fitting since in an episode of Codename: Kids Next Door there was a clown mafia with their boss being a parody of Vito in clown form, also very fitting since Maurice Lamarche did numerous voices for that show including the main antagonist Father.
His daughter Fru Fru is said to be inspired by Vito's daughter Connie but is also a pseudo parody of Snooki from Jersey Shore only without the attitude problems, she even has Snooki's hair and accent too. But she's a lot more pleasant than the real Snooki and much cuter too. Also I didn't know it was him at first but...Jesse Corti is the voice of Mr Manchas the jaguar limo driver, maybe i'm so used to hearing him as Gaston's sidekick Lefou in Beauty and the Beast - but I didn't know that was him voicing Manchas when I first heard him because his voice sounds deeper and has a Hispanic accent.
Oh and I forgot to mention Yax who is voiced by Tommy Chong - the second half of the infamous stoner comedy duo Cheech and Chong. Another interesting I like about this movie is that depending on which country you see it in - the character Peter Moosebridge of the ZNN news show is a different animal. Like for example in American, Mexico, Canada and Europe he is a moose, but he's a panda in China, a Jaguar in Brazil, a Tanuki in Japan and my personal favorite - a koala in the Australian and New Zealand version. And all versions of him are voiced by a famous news anchor from that country.
Another thing I like is how all the anthro characters have movements that match the animals they're based on including the sloth Flash who, as you probably know isn't..veeeeery...fast...at...aalll.
While some people have been wondering why they aren't any birds in the city, I can imagine that they'll elaborate on this in future Zootopia projects. I imagine there being two bird-centric areas in Zootopia, one for tropical birds, and one for nocturnal or predatorial birds, the latter I imagine being not unlike the Skeksis from Jim Henson's under-appreciated masterpiece The Dark Crystal (fitting since there was a Skeksis-like character in the Toy Story short the 'Toy Story That Time Forgot').
This movie has a great message as I mentioned earlier and it's one that is quite powerful and effective. Don't let what other people label you as stop you from achieving your goals and making your dreams a reality, because like the motto goes - you can be anything. And that's a message I can relate to as well.
I rate this movie 100 out of 100 and give it two or in this case - four thumbs up, I highly recommend this movie and suggest that you go and see it if you haven't seen it already, you'll have a great time watching it. I'm Monstermaster13 and this has been my Zootopia review, stay tuned for more reviews this month and for more exciting updates and news - by the way in case you're wondering, I plan on reviewing Critters 1 and 2 soon.
Now if you excuse me, i'm going to go and see if I can get tickets to Gazelle's next concert.
